Much like Storm Claudia swept through the northern region the prior day, Manchester City blew United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal win for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This result marked consecutive league defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to manage domestic and continental football with a limited team has been a widely debated topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared tired throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in opposition, have fewer loading issues. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since healing from injury.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose potent offense manipulated and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors disorganized. In advance of this match, United had let in just a handful in this league campaign but they fell apart in the face of the hosts' attacking flair.

Early Chances

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, using the gap left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her passes were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had several forays forward, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the wings but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the term.

They added to their cushion with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the midfield from central defence, the field became spacious for City. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the right before delivering a precise ground pass for Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The primary adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the post, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to defeat any team who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to put them in a strong situation after nine games.
