A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates outlets across the country and abroad.

"The first tuna heralds good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the yearly January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his personal record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
