Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Summers stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and look forward following their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

The newly public communications showed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected the economist's determination to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement comes after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on recently to endorse a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has said he intends to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.

A batch of Epstein-connected emails released by the legislative panel last week referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications indicated that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.

After the emails were made available with the general audience, he said he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with the financier".

He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the people closest to me".

Summers served in leadership roles under party leaders; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He led the institution from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was not connected with the group.

He entered the leadership of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
